The Brodix oval port cylinder heads and manifold I chose for my winning EMC  Chevy
produced an awesome torque curve all the way from 2500 to 6500 rpm. My 509ci

Engine builder magazine (November 2005)

Engine Masters Challenge Champs Build For Max Horsepower On Pump Gas
The 2005 "Jeg's Engine Masters Challenge" pitted 39 performance engine builders against themselves and each other to build powerful yet "streetable" performance motors. When the roar of the dynos faded, Orlando, FL's Lennart Bergqvist (Autoshop Racing Engines) and wife Brigitta (a very capable wrench-turner in her own right) collected a whopping $82,500 in prize money for their efforts. As born in the minds of the editors of Popular Hot Rodding magazine in 2002, the idea was to establish a general set of parameters that would typify a "street" engine - yet give engine builders sufficient latitude to come up with unique solutions to the challenge at hand. The contest organizers wanted to underscore the "streetability" aspect, so instead of awarding the prize for peak horsepower, the judging criteria called for a points system based on the average horsepower over the range of 2,500 to 6,500 rpm, plus the average torque reading.

Autoshop racing engines wins the 2005 jegs engine masters challenge

That was certainly quite an honor for Autoshop Racing Engines, and brings with it significant bragging rights, to be sure. Beating the best of the best is always a huge accomplishment!
Not only did the Autoshop Racing Engines duo of Lennart and Birgitta Bergqvist bring a very well planned out and meticulously assembled combination in their big block509 Chevy, they also made the right tuning choices to adapt it to the conditions and get the most out of it on the engine dyno. In the end it all made the difference.

COMP Cams® And TCI® Master The Competition Again At
Annual Engine Masters Competition

COMP Cams® and TCI® equipped engines finish first and second in latest round of prestigious event

Once again COMP Cams® and TCI® Rattler® powered engines dominated the Engine Masters Challenge, as over forty competitors duked it out to become the “World Champion Engine Builder.” All four of the top finishing engines were outfitted with COMP Cams® camshafts, the top two with TCI® Rattler® engine absorbers. When it was over, Lennart and Birgitta Bergqvist (Autoshop Racing Engines), of Orlando, FL, took the top honors from two-time champion Jon Kaase, who finished fourth overall. The win by the Bergqvists was an amazing accomplishment for the Florida-based engine builders, who pushed their big block Chevrolet to new heights by making a peak of 850 horsepower with 91 octane pump gas.

Crane Cams  (October 2005)

Lennart Bergqvist’s Winning Engine Masters Challenge 509” Chevy Pumped Out A Record 853 Peak HP Using Crane Gold-Race Wide-Body Stud Rockers!

Last week, we told you about Orlando’s Lennart Bergqvist and his Engine Masters Challenge winning big-block Chevy. We also noted that his engine produced a best average horsepower of 599.33, with these numbers being averaged across the “down-low” to “up high” dyno tests. Now, we have further information that Lennart’s 509” Chevy also pounded out an amazing 853 peak horsepower, best during the recent Engine Masters competition! Lennart chose our Crane Cams Gold-Race “Wide-Body,” extruded billet aluminum, stud mounted, full-roller rockers (Part # 13763TR-16) for his winning engine and ran the competition without using a stud girdle! Lennart and his wife Birgitta did a masterful job of creating this surprising engine, running with only 11.5:1 compression, to handle the competition requirement for “pump gas.” This certainly proves that this same engine combination could be comfortably used in a serious street driven vehicle application. Congratulations again to Lennart and Birgitta and the staff at Autoshop Racing Engines in Orlando, Florida, (407 678-7705).

Bergqvist the Engine Master.
11th October: 2005 Jegs Engine Masters Challenge winner, ex-pat Swede Lennart Bergqvist of Orlando's Autoshop Racing Engines, says that the 2005 Challenge was the closest and most exciting in the event's five-year existence.

"Some competitors burned up their motors at home trying to overcome the obstacles to make power on 91 octane pump gas and keeping within the strict rules designed to keep the build-ups even", says Lennart. "This year the challenge was to build a 509 cubic inch Big Block and we decided to enter a Chevy.

"We made our dyno pulls early in the contest and set the standard for the power needed to qualify for the Friday's final. Our score of 1285.33 held up as the top score until two-time champion Jon Kaase ran. Everyone's eyes were glued to the scoreboard after John's pulls, and when his numbers came up a big "Wow" went trough the crowd. John had beaten our score by just 0.67 with a total of 1286.0.

"In the final we were scheduled to run next to last of the six finalists, and John was to run last. After the warm-up we decided to make a change to the valve lash to boost the compression a little, since the barometric pressure had dropped. We improved to an average of 1288 points.

"Now the pressure was on John. Could he match our power? John started his motor and made his warm up pulls, then looked at the data and went to work inside the dyno room. We knew he needed to improve but would he make the right calls? His final pulls started and the first pull was strong, maybe better than ours. The excitement was unbearable when he started his second pull. In the middle of the pull we could hear his motor lose some power, but it was hard to judge just how much. Then when John made his third and final pull his motor started detonating. He had gone too far in his tuning to try to keep up with us. Autoshop Racing Engines were the new Engine Masters Champion!

"Our peak horsepower was 853hp at 6500 rpm and peak torque was 756 lbs at 4900rpm with air cleaner, mufflers and regular pump gas."

We're sure that everyone will join Tog and Sharkman in congratulating Lennart and Birgita on their victory in the Engine Masters Challenge. Great job guys!
